Gen Z prefers to share location with their parents

Gen Z seems okay with their parents using location-sharing apps to keep tabs on them.

Security is seen as the main benefit of sharing your location with others at all times.

Rising anxiety levels among young people could drive the adoption of tracking apps.

The growing popularity of location apps like Life360 tells us that young people are increasingly happy that their parents are able to see where they are all the time.

Downloads of Life360 have doubled in the past two years, with one in nine U.S. households – 33 million – now using the app, the Wall Street Journal.

Also other apps like Family Link of Google e Where from Apple are used by Gen Z to share their location with parents and friends while walking to school, in the car or even during appointments.

These tools can also send alerts for events such as traffic accidents.

Location tracking can be turned off and on so a user can maintain privacy whenever they want, but according to a 2022 survey conducted by The Harris Poll, 16% of US adults have the setting always on.

Un survey conducted by Life1 among 200.360 adults found that 54% of respondents believe it is necessary or usually appropriate for parents to ask their children to share their location at all times.

The adoption of location tracking is believed to be related to increased anxiety levels among younger generations.

“The turbulence of Gen Z adolescence has spawned a mental health crisis that has only been amplified by the pandemic, social media and the 24-hour news cycle,” said Dr. Michele Borba, an educational psychologist and spokesperson for Life<>.

“In uncertain times, this generation has come to desire the added layer of security that location sharing provides,” he said.

Life360 survey

Life360's survey found that 94% of Gen Z saw the benefits of location sharing. Half, however, consider these apps to be synonymous with security.

For women, the assurance that someone else knows their location is especially important. According to the survey, 72% of GenZ female respondents said they believe their physical well-being benefits from location sharing.

Long-distance driving and visiting new or dangerous places were the two most common reasons for using the app.

“If something happened to me, I think it would be helpful for my parents to know my last whereabouts,” a XNUMX-year-old told the Wall Street Journal.

In addition to security, friend tracking and location sharing are also present. These features have become a way to show affection to younger generations.

“There is an intimacy that is intertwined with that act,” he told the New York Times Michael Sake, professor of digital sociology at City, University of London. “There is a test of being friends.”
