The Russian Sber launches Gigachat, the rival of ChatGPT

Major Russian tech company Sber announced on Monday the launch of gigachat, its conversational AI app set to rival US ChatGPT.

The state-owned company said in a statement on its website that it was "launching its own version" of a chatbot, which will be called GigaChat - a novelty for Russia.

The Russian-language app is now available by invitation only in test mode.

Sber said that GigaChat can "converse, write messages, answer factual questions" but also "write code" and "create images from descriptions".

Sber CEO German Gref, who has led the company's digital transformation in recent years, said the launch was "a breakthrough for the entire vast universe of Russian technologies."

Russia has bolstered its domestic tech sector in recent years, especially since it was hit by a flurry of Western sanctions after the Kremlin launched its offensive into Ukraine.

He also tightened laws to regulate the industry, amid growing political repression.

The Kremlin has called for the blocking of several sites and social media platforms to censor voices critical of its offensive in Ukraine.

The launch of GigaChat comes on the heels of the runaway success of ChatGPT and is seen by pundits as the latest breakthrough in the tech competition between Russia and the US.

ChatGPT's success sparked a gold rush among other tech companies and venture capitalists, with Google rushing to launch its own chatbot and investors pouring money into all kinds of AI projects.
