Zaha Hadid Architects is using image generators AI such as DALL-E 2 and Midjourney to come up with design ideas for projects, studio principal Patrik Schumacher revealed.
In a recent roundtable about how artificial intelligence (AI) could change the design, Schumacher gave a presentation on the use of image generation technology by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA).
“Not all projects use theartificial intelligence, but let's say I'm encouraging its use. In particular towards those who are working on the competitions and the initial ideation, above all to see what comes out, and to have a wider repertoire”, he said during the Round Table.
“They often give us interesting hints and ideas, new types of shapes and movements, and in many cases we have shown them as first sketches to clients.”
“You don't even have to do much, you show them raw and you can generate ideas with clients and within the team, thanks to light, shadow, geometry, coherence, the sense of gravity and order is so powerful and the ideas amaze.”
The architect showed a large catalog of images of imaginary buildings created using DALL-E2 , midjourney e stable diffusion with the fluid and muscular style characteristic of the studio made famous by its founder Zaha Hadid.
Online AI tools like DALL-E 2 generate an image in seconds from a text description. Since their emergence over the past year, image generators have gained enormous attention, sparking a debate about how AI could transform the creative industry.
The winner of a Sony World Photography Award declined the award, revealing that his haunting black-and-white portrait of two women had been generated by DALL-E 2 .
Schumacher compared using AI text-in-picture tools to design brainstorming as a way to come up with ideas.
“For me, it's always been very similar to teams soliciting verbally, referencing previous projects and ideas and gesturing with their hands,” she said.
"That's the way to generate ideas and now I can do it directly with Midjourney or DALL-E 2, or the team can do it on our behalf too, so I think it's quite powerful."
Among the AI-generated images he submitted were blueprints for potential projects in Neom , the controversial mega-development in Saudi Arabia.
He outlined how the studio selects about “10 to 15 percent” of the output from AI imagers to drive the 3D modeling stage forward.
“These things are so coherent and they're so meaningful that it's easy to model them because they have that implicit three-dimensional coherence,” Schumacher said.
Zaha Hadid Architects, which is one of the largest architecture firms in the UK and among the most prestigious in the world, has set up an in-house AI research group, he added.
