3D Systems simplifies manufacturing and drives continuous innovation by in-sourcing the production of additional build platforms

Insourcing of metal and polymer production printers at plants in Riom, France and Rock Hill, South Carolina enables improved quality control, reduced production cycle times, and accelerated new product introduction

Improve customer satisfaction through shorter lead times, greater product support and process customization

Enables better resource management and asset utilization that is expected to reduce total inventories by more than 20% in 2024

Today, 3D Systems announced the completion of its strategic initiative to insource the production of two additional strategic print platforms.

Strategy

The company has transitioned this business from two electronic manufacturing services (EMS) partners, with whom 3D Systems has business relationships to expand adoption of these platforms globally. By insourcing, the company now controls the entire manufacturing process, from design to manufacturing, leveraging its deep technical and application expertise to provide its customers with products of superior quality and innovation. Additionally, with this increased level of control over the manufacturing process, 3D Systems has equaled or improved production quality and reduced lead times to meet customer demand.

Dr. Jeffrey Graves, president and CEO of 3D Systems, said: “We are pleased to have reached this important milestone which is catalyzing our ability to deliver improved quality and pioneering innovation for our customers. We began our insourcing initiative last year by consolidating the production of multiple polymer 3D printing platforms at our Rock Hill, South Carolina facility. Since then we have seen dramatic improvements in both cost and quality, as well as capacity to accelerate the introduction of new products to meet the ever-changing needs of the market. Since we embarked on this initiative last year, delivery times have shortened every quarter, and we believe this activity, along with other actions, puts us on a path to reduce overall inventory by more than 20% in 2024.

The in-house production of these two printing platforms began in August 2023 and from today the production units are available to be placed at customer sites.
