Electronic road vignettes in the Czech Republic

Travel comfort for many people means being able to get around by car. There is an extensive road network in Europe, which includes both free and toll roads. There are also toll roads in the Czech Republic, for which tolls must be paid.

For tourists traveling with their own or rented vehicle, the most convenient option is to purchase a "vignette", which allows you to use toll roads in the Czech Republic. Motorcycles are exempt from paying road tolls however all other types of vehicles must pay to use the toll highways.

Who has to buy the Czech e-vignette and who is exempt from paying the road toll?

The following are exempt from paying road tolls in the Czech Republic:

  • electric cars (provided you fill in the appropriate form),
  • hybrid and hydrogen cars,
  • cars carrying holders of the Czech certificate ZTP or ZTP/P (certificate of disability),
  • vintage cars,
  • the motorcycles.

All other types of vehicles (up to 3,5 tonnes) traveling on roads with at least four lanes require a vignette. The trailer is not subject to payment.

Verification of the motorway sticker and fines for the absence of this

Both the traffic police and customs officials check for the presence of the electronic toll sticker. Verification is carried out only on toll highways and is done by the license plate number. Video surveillance systems are installed on toll sections that read the number plate and patrol the streets. If traffic police officers have any doubts, they pass on information about the violator to the next checkpoint, where they can stop him. Offenders who do not have the electronic motorway sticker are subject to a fine of up to 20.000 Czech crowns. This only affects vehicles that are not on the vehicle toll exemption list. Toll-exempt vehicles are also checked. If it is discovered that the toll-free entitlement has been granted illegally, a fine of up to 100.000 Czech crowns is expected. A driver who has not submitted the request or has not reported the termination of the right to the toll exemption within 10 days is subject to a fine of up to 5.000 Czech crowns.
