FIA Formula E championship cars will save energy thanks to ABB technology

ABB will integrate its innovative energy management software solution ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, helping to maximize the energy efficiency of race track operations.

Innovation for Sustainability

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship starts on 14 January 2023 in Mexico City, and ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® will be used in the competition. After successful trials during the previous season, ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® will allow you to monitor and analyze the total energy produced in the race, contributing to more efficient use.

Up to 14 control units will be installed in the host venues which will collect data relating to the amount of electricity (kilowatts) used at that moment by the teams and other race partners and the amount of electricity (kilowatt hours) consumed in a given period of time. This information will be transmitted to tender control via the Microsoft Azure cloud. Total consumption will also be monitored across the entire E-Prix site including the TV broadcast suite, E-Village fan zone, media centre, catering facilities, paddock and team pits.

Daniela Lužanin, head of the ABB partnership for Formula E

For ABB, the Formula E partnership has always been more than a race, it is a proving ground for innovative technologies and we intend to continue to bring more of our solutions to the races. Energy efficiency is key to reducing emissions and achieving sustainability goals and ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® will be fully implemented this season to help improve this within the league.

The various road circuits used by Formula E present the added challenge of having to use different power sources in different locations. ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® will help solve this problem by providing engineers with a dashboard that provides real-time visibility into all energy present on the track, enabling Formula E engineering teams to streamline all on-site activities, regardless of power source .
