EIT Food: Cultivated Meat Innovation Challenge call now open

EIT FoodIn partnership with GFI Europe, launched the call "Cultivated Meat Innovation Challenge".

THEobiettivo of the call is to find cutting-edge solutions for reduce the costs of cell culture media. Indeed, to increase production and lower prices, open access research will be essential for reduce il land cost di cell culture free of animal components, increase the availability of cell lines, improve the scaffold - used to support cell growth and recreate the complex fibrous structure of conventionally produced meat - and build larger and more efficient bioreactors in which to grow cells .

The announcement calls for proposals that can address the problem through one of the two approaches following:

• To develop recycling technologies of the  culture media or other ways to remove or metabolise ammonia, lactate and other waste products in cell cultures;
• To develop un culture medium cellular low cost for species relevant cells incorporating food grade hydrolyzates and non-animal based solutions for reduce the need (or the cost) of recombinant proteins and growth factors. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate food grade ingredients whenever possible. The culture medium formulation must perform at or above that of an equivalent culture medium containing serum, based on standard cell growth and proliferation assays.

The announcement will go to reward up to four winners, who will each receive 100.000 euro to develop their solution.

The deadline for submitting applications is September 30th 2022.
