This expansion, which highlights the commitment to equipping the country with a modern and sustainable infrastructure, is a significant step towards a future of renewable energy and a greener future.
Growth has not been uniform across the country. Lombardy, with over 8.000 charging points, confirms its position in first place, while the Campania emerges as the fastest growing region in 2023 (+2.212 installations year to date). Other significant progress has been made in the South and in the Islands, where 23% of the total charging points are now concentrated. This regional distribution demonstrates a commitment to balanced and accessible expansion nationwide.
While charging infrastructure along Italian motorways develops rapidly, with 851 charging points as of 30 September 2023, the challenge now is to overcome the inaction of some motorway operators to guarantee an efficient and widespread service.
The choice between charging your electric vehicle at home or at a public station is influenced by several aspects. For those who opt for the home comfort, a normal 3 kW socket may be sufficient, with costs similar to those of a household appliance. However, the times of charging takes longer, varying between 5 and 8 hours. To speed up the process, many people choose to install a Wallbox, a private charging station, offering faster charging times.
For public charging, the stations vary in terms of power and type of current, with charging stations ranging from 7 kW (alternating current) up to 350 kW (direct current). On average, the cost to top up at current stations alternating varies between 40 and 72 cents per kWh, while for direct current ones, the price varies between 45 and 79 cents per kWh. Considering a 40 kWh charging for the cost of one kWh in Italy, the total cost may vary from 16 to 31,6 euros, depending on the station and type of subscription, if available.
Italy takes a significant step towards sustainable mobility with the introduction of the "Electric column bonus", a government measure aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. This incentive, aimed at supporting citizens and condominiums who undertake the installation of charging infrastructure, represents a key element in the emissions reduction strategy and in the transition towards cleaner energy.
How much is the bonus? | |
Category | Bonus Value |
Individuals | Up to 1.500 euros |
Condominiums | Up to 8.000 euros |
The bonus covers 80% of the expenses incurred for the installation of the electric charging stations, including the purchase of the stations themselves, the necessary electrical work, the essential construction works, monitoring systems, design costs, supervision of the works, safety, testing and connection to the network electric.
In 2023, the period for the Submission of applications was established between 9 and 23 November.
It is also important to highlight the limitations operational of the incentive, including the narrow time window for requests and the obligation to use certified communication tools such as PEC. Furthermore, the importance of a non-retroactive measure for 2024, which is clear and stable, to effectively stimulate the charging infrastructure market and support citizens in the transition to electric cars.
In conclusion, Italy is moving towards a more future green, with an expanding electric charging network and eco-focused policies. These efforts not only improve the accessibility and usability of electric vehicles but also position the country as a model for sustainability in Europe.
