The auto parts market, trends, challenges and the ONLINE market

The car parts market in Europe is growing and will undergo a strong transformation in the coming years.

Growth will change geographically: Mature markets such as Western Europe, North America and Latin America will grow at annual rates of 3% or less.

Eastern Europe will grow by 5,7% and Asia by 8,6%, representing almost 30% of the total and therefore guiding suppliers' investments. As regards future trends, CLEPA/Qvartz research identifies 7 trends that will radically change the auto parts market:

  1. Softwareization of vehicles: software, or rather the "softwarization" of vehicles, closely connected with connectivity, will become very important. The CAGR (the annual compound growth rate) of software/content/data, with 70% of the fleet connected, will in fact be 15,3%;
  2. Connectivity: it will be essential to position ourselves in technological segments such as ADAS and retrofit solutions, for example telematics, to enrich vehicles that are no longer "fresh". Strengthening relationships with customers will also be very useful;
  3. Electrification: “traditional” components will lose ground due to electrification, increasing weight of software, connectivity and autonomous vehicles;
  4. Self-driving vehicles: Autonomous vehicles will influence the auto parts market;
  5. Data analysis: suppliers will need to have expertise in innovative technologies and business models, especially for software and the use of data;
  6. Mergers and acquisitions: indicated for having expertise in innovative technologies and business models;
  7. Participation in innovation ecosystems: important for making agreements with technology start-ups.

Auto Parts for electric vehicles

The auto parts market for electric vehicles is continuously growing and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. According to a report by the Polytechnic University of Milan, by 2030, one car in seven in Italy will be electric and new registrations of electric cars will account for more than half of the total (55%).
The internal combustion engine is a much discussed topic in the automotive industry. According to research by Quattroruote.it, the European Commission has proposed to focus exclusively on electric mobility by 2035. However, it seems that some results have already been achieved: it is very likely that the new Euro 7 standards will come into force in 2027 (and no longer in 2026) and, above all, that they are less restrictive than the original wishes indicated by the Commission before the traditional public consultations, which began last year.

Original vs. compatible auto parts

The choice between original and compatible car parts depends on the customer's needs. According to an article in Motori Magazine, from a qualitative point of view, the yield and efficiency of these two types are practically identical, although they involve other factors. However, a car with original parts has a higher value when compared to the same model with compatible parts.
The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that car manufacturers are not required to provide data electronically for further processing. Independent parts dealers would also not be discriminated against, as dealers and repairers would have the same information available.

Self-driving vehicles

Self-driving vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are mobile robots that follow a set of rules, whether signals or indicators, while navigating. The first AGV was introduced in the 50s and the market has grown rapidly throughout the 21st century and these mobile robots are now common in several industrial sectors.
According to a McKinsey report, the automotive aftermarket has a current trade value of around 800 billion euros and is expected to grow by 3% annually to around 1,2 trillion euros by 2030. Over the next few years, ten trends, in three broad categories, they will develop. radically change the sector.

The challenges of the sector

The automotive aftermarket sector is facing several challenges. According to a McKinsey report, the industry is undergoing significant changes due to emerging trends and changing consumer demands. The report identifies ten trends that will radically change the industry in the coming years:

  1. Disruptions along the value chain: software and component manufacturers for electric vehicles (EVs) they will enter at the beginning of the chain. Furthermore, e-commerce and digital players will disrupt the traditional business of parts distributors, and workshops will witness the proliferation of specialized operators (for example, electric vehicles or fleet maintenance).
  2. New Competitors: Competition will arise from unexpected players, such as digital natives looking for opportunities to enter the automotive aftermarket space.
  3. Emerging Markets: Completely new areas of consumer needs will emerge and push aftermarket companies to respond.
  4. Customer Engagement and Customer Journey: The customer journey will change and aftermarket operators will need to adapt to new customer expectations.
  5. Profit pool: Profits will move along the value chain.
  6. Digitalization: Increasing digitalization will drive the industry.
  7. Electric Vehicles: The rise of electric vehicles will change the industry.
  8. Workshops: The workshops will witness the proliferation of specialized actors.
  9. Sustainability: Sustainability initiatives will shape the future of the industry.
  10. On-demand services: On-demand services will become more popular.
