Artificial intelligence in healthcare, the 3rd AIIC meeting in Palermo

What effective contribution can artificial intelligence make and is already making to the Italian healthcare and healthcare sector?

This is the key question of the 3rd National Meeting of the Italian Association of Clinical Engineers AIIC which was held in Palermo on 30 November 2023.

Artificial intelligence in healthcare: challenges and prospects for citizens' health, an event that involves experts from different fields to offer both a "systematic" vision and to carry out an in-depth analysis within specific clinical specialties already affected by intelligent technological systems.

Use of Artificial Intelligence in Hospitals

“Artificial intelligence is currently one of the great frontier themes of healthcare technology – says the AIIC president, Umberto Nocco – and therefore it seemed inevitable and natural to propose a day of study and in-depth analysis on this theme, which we intend to develop with the peculiarities of our approach. We are a decidedly pragmatic profession and therefore in Palermo we intend to offer a global vision of the contribution that Artificial Intelligence can offer to those who care and those who are cared for, and we do so by moving away from the mystical and mythical conception with which we sometimes talk about AI, to favor on the one hand the experiences already achieved in the clinical field and on the other the experiences already existing in the clinical engineering sector".

Privacy and Data Security

“In particular – specifies Lorenzo Leogrande, past president of AIIC and president of the Meeting – we have seen first-hand that the use of artificial intelligence raises many concerns, linked for example to the protection of privacy and data security, to the interpretation of results that must also take into account ethical aspects, not to mention the impact on the employment of some professional figures. Precisely to shed light on these critical points, our Meeting has included a series of excellent communications which also involve experts and professionals from Sicily, a region in which both the institutions and the Academy are playing an important and driving role. The final objective is only one, in line with our associative tradition: to try to contribute to clarity, so that a technological culture is generated that has useful consequences for patients and for the NHS, just as the title of the event says" .

The Meeting Program

The program of the AIIC Meeting includes four plenary sessions which will delve into different areas and approaches:

  • the general and social aspects of AI;
  • AI seen by Healthcare Professionals, multidisciplinary session par excellence;
  • the AI and the Regulatory;
  • AI and Clinical Engineering, final session of the day.
