AI Index Report, HAI released the Artificial Intelligence report

The AI Index Report is an independent initiative of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), led by the AI Index Steering Committee, an interdisciplinary group of experts from across academia and industry.

The annual report keeps track , collects  e displays AI-related data, to support meaningful decisions, and advance AI responsibly and ethically.

Features AI Index Report

The AI Index Report supports many different organizations to track progress in artificial intelligence. These organizations include: the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University, LinkedIn, NetBase Quid, Lightcast, and McKinsey. 2023 report includes new analysis on underlying models, including their geopolitics and costs of training, the environmental impact of AI systems, education AI K-12 and Public Opinion Trends in theAI. The AI Index Report also expanded its tracking of global AI legislation from 25 countries in 2022 to 127 in 2023.

Professional skills

The demand for AI-related job skills is increasing in virtually all industries (in the US). Across all sectors, the number of vacancies related toAI increased from 1,7% in 2021 to 1,9% in 2022 on average. The United States is increasingly looking for workers with skills related toArtificial intelligence.

The interest of politicians in AI is on the rise.

An analysis of legislative documents from 127 countries shows that the number of bills containing “artificial intelligence” that have been signed into law has grown from just 1 in 2016 to 37 in 2022. Similarly, an analysis of parliamentary documents on theartificial intelligence across 81 countries shows that mentions of AI in global legislative proceedings have increased nearly 6,5-fold since 2016.

Chinese citizens have a positive attitude towards AI products and services

In a 2022 IPSOS survey, 78% of Chinese respondents (the highest percentage of surveyed countries) agree with the statement that products and services using AI have more advantages than disadvantages. After Chinese respondents, those in Saudi Arabia (76%) and India (71%) were the most positive about AI products. Only 35% of sampled Americans (among the lowest in the countries surveyed) agree that products and services that use artificial intelligence have more advantages than disadvantages.

Technical ethics of AI

Fairness, bias, and ethics in machine learning continue to be topics of interest among researchers and practitioners alike. As the technical barrier to entry for building and deploying generative AI systems has dramatically lowered, the ethical issues surrounding AI have become more apparent to the general public. Startups and large companies are in a rush to implement and release generative models. Technology is no longer controlled by a small group of actors.

The AI Index Report highlights tensions between raw model performance and ethical issues, as well as new metrics that quantify bias in multimodal models.

Industry precedes academia

Until 2014, the most significant machine learning models were released by academia. Since then, the industry has taken over. In 2022, there were 32 significant machine learning models produced by industry compared to just three produced by academia. Building cutting-edge AI systems requires increasingly large amounts of data, processing and money. All resources that industry players inherently possess in larger quantities than non-profit organizations and academia.

The number of incidents involving the misuse of AI is on the rise.

According to the AIAAIC database, which tracks incidents related to the ethical abuse of AI, the number of AI incidents and controversies has increased 26-fold since 2012. Some notable incidents in 2022 included a deepfake video of the surrender of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This growth is evidence of both an increased use of artificial intelligence technologies and an awareness of the possibilities for misuse.
