Mary Kay challenges young people around the world to tackle Goal 14 for Sustainable Development: Life Underwater as part of NFTE's third annual World Series of Innovation challenge

The global competition celebrates youth entrepreneurship and the power of innovative thinking

Mary Kay Inc., a leading supporter of women's empowerment and entrepreneurship, announces its third World Series of Innovation (WSI) challenge in partnership with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) organization. The global competition invites young people aged between 13 and 24 to test their critical reasoning skills and participate in solving some of the major challenges humanity currently faces, to progress towards achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mary Kay's WSI Challenge

will begin on September 15 on the occasion of World Clean Up Day. The challenge promoted by Mary Kay encourages young entrepreneurs to present innovative solutions to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: life below water. Specifically, students are asked to study a solution to further promote the conservation and/or protection of marine and coastal ecosystems globally.

“All life on Earth began in the oceans and depends on them. Water is the most precious resource on our planet and it is vital not only to respect it, but also to help protect it, "said Deborah Gibbins, Operations Director for Mary Kay Inc." The next generation of global thinkers and leaders are already addressing these crucial areas of interest, promoting conservation efforts. We are eager to find out how young people around the world can contribute to the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity globally. "

WSI collaboration

During its first year collaborating on NFTE's World Series of Innovation in 2020, Mary Kay spearheaded a WSI challenge for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Young entrepreneurs were invited to think of a product, service or initiative that could promote the reuse or upcycling of textiles. In 2021, Mary Kay sponsored its second WSI challenge to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. The students were tasked with developing programs to promote gender equality in the workplace and to ensure equal access to economic opportunities for women and girls.

“Mary Kay's Global Ocean Conservation Challenge challenges our young WSI competitors to think big when it comes to water quality,” explained JD LaRock, President and CEO of NFTE. “In the classrooms, students learn that water is essential for a healthy ecosystem. However, it is thanks to experiences such as the WSI challenges that they are empowered to protect this resource. They can devise strategies to defend marine life, safeguard the oceans, ensure sustainable access to safe drinking water, protect water resources from pollution, address over-consumption and help preserve our ecosystem for the next generations. It is something very powerful. "
