VLC technology, i.e. the visible light communication (VLC), consists of the transmission of data using light. LEDs are used as transmitters, while photodetectors that transform light signals into electrical impulses serve as receivers.
Using VLC technology in an industrial environment, this is the new challenge. Production plants have sources of interference, such as walls, metal objects and machines, which can affect their functioning. Researchers from the Fraunhofer IOSB-INA and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo, Germany carried out a measurement campaign by testing three influencing factors: ambient light, dust particles e reflections from slow-moving people and vehicles.
To measure phenomena that occur faster than a millisecond, there are advanced technologies. Researchers from the National Institute of Optics (INO) of the CNR of Florence and the University of Florence have patented a device based on the innovative VLC (Visible Light Communication) communication technology to allow vehicles and road signs to communicate in less than one millisecond and avoid collisions.
VLC technology is based on the idea of modulating the intensity of LED light to transmit digital information: using this system and a light that is invisible to the human eye, the patented device allows traffic lights and vehicles to exchange wireless information in less than millisecond and avoid impacts and dangerous maneuvers. Every year, in fact, around 1.3 million people die in road accidents in the world, 3287 people a day. Developing devices capable of preventing collisions would make roads safer and the lives of motorists more comfortable.
The device, currently applicable to the automotive sector, public lighting and road signs, could in the future be applied to many industrial and public sectors, such as defence, healthcare).
The technology was presented in an operational demo, integrating the technology in question with 5G technology, with considerable success. There are collaborations with companies that are interested in exploiting the IP linked to this patent application. A patent application has recently been filed for a version of VLC technology for applications in museum and/or commercial environments. In this way it is possible to provide innovative services dedicated to users, while also allowing their positioning even in indoor environments where GPS technology does not work.
